David Caballero Riera: The Legacy and Tragic Death of a Catalan Futsal Icon

David Caballero Riera, executed this morning in Montgat, Barcelona, was a well-known figure in Catalan futsal. Journalist Anna Punsí first reported the news, which has been confirmed by sources close to the deceased. Caballero had a police record and was the founder and president of Barceloneta Futsal, a team in Group 3 of Spain’s Second Division B. According to Punsí, his death is linked to disputes over illicit businesses, and the Mossos d’Esquadra are investigating potential enemies and motives, including a possible revenge killing. Caballero was also connected to businesses in the Port of Barcelona, where he previously worked.

the murder

The murder occurred at around 9:00 a.m. after he dropped off one of his children at Hamelin-Laie International School. While sitting at a bar terrace having coffee, an individual approached and shot him twice in the back of the head. Witnesses stated he had received threats prior to the incident. The assailant fled on a black motorcycle, and the Criminal Investigation Division of Granollers has launched an operation to locate the suspect. Emergency medical services arrived but could not save him, as he died instantly. Psychologists were mobilized to support the school community, but the school activated its own protocols and declined external help.

deep roots in futsal

Caballero had deep roots in futsal, having played briefly in the 1990s for Industrias Santa Coloma and Barça’s amateur team. Later, he founded Barceloneta Futsal, which grew to prominence in the Ciutat Vella district. The team was promoted to Second Division B in 2016 and became known for fielding strong squads, often offering players competitive salaries for the category. Barceloneta was regarded as a model club in the area, with professional-level travel and accommodations for matches.

In addition to his work with Barceloneta, Caballero created a grassroots futsal project for over 100 boys and girls in a humble neighborhood. Players did not pay fees, as he financed everything personally. However, due to a lack of facilities and support, the initiative was dissolved two years ago.

Caballero’s involvement in futsal was not without controversy. In 2022, during a league match against Canet de Mar, he was reported for violent behavior after being provoked by insults and a spit. The referee’s report described him throwing objects and attacking spectators in the stands.

Despite the challenges, Caballero remained passionate about futsal. His dream was to promote Barceloneta to the RFEF Second Division. Five hours after his death, the Catalan Football Federation expressed condolences, honoring his contributions as a player, coach, and president. Barceloneta Futsal requested a postponement of their upcoming match scheduled for November 16, which was approved by the National Futsal Committee.
