Jesús Velasco’s new era as head of the Spanish National Team began at the Sines pavilion in Portugal’s Setúbal district, where they’ll face Portugal on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. In Toledo’s first session as coach, there was a sense of excitement and optimism, with 12 new faces and some notable returns. Among them is Mario Rivillos, who returns after eight years away, now as a two-time UEFA Futsal Champions League and Intercontinental Cup winner. Rivillos expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “After eight years, returning to the National Team is incredible.”
Known as ‘Super’ Mario, he acknowledged his dedication over the years: “I’ve always seen myself here, but we all have a coach within us, and I wasn’t in those plans. But I’ve always given 100% at every club.” Now, at 34, he’s excited for this opportunity under Velasco, saying, “My time has finally come.” Rivillos, who last shone for Spain in the 2016 European Championship, has long awaited this chance.
His career had seen a surprising decline in National Team appearances despite his talents, as previous coaches didn’t select him, even with his four UEFA Futsal Champions League titles. Velasco, familiar with Rivillos from their time at Madrid, has now brought him into the new lineup. Rivillos, once known for his explosive play, has gained maturity and looks back on his years out of the spotlight with grace, saying, “I’ve always been part of my teams, proving I’m still here. Some thought I was done, but I’m more driven than ever at 34.”
National Team Form
He emphasized the importance of the National Team’s return to form, noting that Velasco brings vast experience. Rivillos expressed, “A change was needed for a while. We need to regain Spain’s respect on the international stage.” Rivillos received an outpouring of support from former teammates and coaches, including Luis Fonseca and his current coach Antonio Vadillo, and shared that this call-up is a huge boost in motivation.
For Rivillos, representing Spain is the ultimate honor: “The National Team means everything. I represent my country in top competition, and I’m going to give it my all to prove why I’m here.” He also acknowledged that Velasco’s roster reflects his intention to explore fresh talent, rotating players in light of injuries and to test options.
Spain’s next match will be a tough one against Portugal, the current European champions, and Spain’s recent archrivals. Rivillos called it “a trial by fire,” expressing excitement to see how they stack up. He stated, “These are the games we love—tough matches that prove who deserves their place.” Fresh off a title with Illes Balears Palma Futsal, Rivillos, who celebrated with his family, affirmed that the success at the club reflects their strong ambition and dedication.
Brazilian futsal legend Falcao praised Palma Futsal, placing them alongside Barça and Movistar Inter as one of the greats. Rivillos concluded, “It’s an honor. Few clubs win two consecutive Champions Leagues. We’ve earned that respect and are ready to keep chasing our dreams.”
