Rekkles’ Journey from LEC Star to T1: A Tale of Contract Drama and Redemption

Over the years, rumors and leaks have swirled around Rekkles’ experiences with G2 and Fnatic, particularly since his departure from the LEC. The player himself has openly criticized both organizations, accusing them of trapping him in “contract jail.”

While Rekkles didn’t criticize his former teammates, he sharply condemned the management of both teams for binding him to unfavorable contracts. He described G2’s behavior as “egoistic” and claimed that Fnatic’s management wanted to bench him only weeks after signing him.

“G2 not only benched me at the end of 2021 during the first year of my three-year contract, but they also ensured that I couldn’t join another LEC team for selfish reasons (financial/easier competition),” he explained. “Fnatic, on the other hand, benched me just four months into my two-year contract, already attempting to push me out just a few weeks after I had joined.”

Contracts

Contracts like the ones Rekkles signed with G2 and Fnatic often involve significant buyout clauses. Designed to limit competition within the region and discourage players from switching to rival LEC teams. This led to Rekkles joining Karmine Corp in the LFL and, later, T1 in the LCK CL. As he was blocked from signing with another LEC team unless an organization was willing to pay a substantial buyout fee alongside offering a competitive contract.

Former G2 CEO Carlos added to the controversy by admitting he doubted the move would work when signing Rekkles, later saying the player “ended up in the second division like he deserved.” Rekkles, in turn, did not hold back, labeling Carlos as an “enemy” during his G2 tenure and accusing the organization of intentionally undermining him.

“I didn’t want them profiting off me, and I’m certain they didn’t want me to go to any team I chose. I know for a fact they had no intention of letting me join whichever team I wanted.”

reports

Reports indicate that G2’s policies may have shifted after Carlos’ departure. As both Yike and Mikyx were allowed to explore their options in the 2025 off-season without buyout clauses.

As for Fnatic, Rekkles was benched after a disappointing split with Rhuckz in support, with the team choosing to prioritize import ADC Noah and support player Trymbi. This left Rekkles sidelined for the remainder of 2023, unable to compete in either bot lane position.

However, Rekkles expressed gratitude towards Karmine Corp and T1 for giving him opportunities outside the LEC, allowing him to remain competitive. Whether he will return to the LEC in 2025 or continue with T1 remains uncertain. His contract with T1 runs until 2026, and it’s not clear if a buyout would be required should he choose to leave.
