Afonso Jesus, who has been training with Sporting and Benfica since the 2016/2017 season, has been named the new captain of the Eagles following Bruno Coelho’s departure to RFS Futsal Club in Latvia.
At 26 years old, the Benfica mainstay expressed his “pride” in assuming this new role within the team. Acknowledged that he had achieved a “childhood dream.”
“It’s a great honor. Since I was young, I dreamed of playing for Benfica, and one of my biggest dreams was to become the team’s captain. Now I have this responsibility. The most important thing is to understand that the team trusts me, and together, we can win titles,” he told BTV.
Looking ahead to the new season, the Portuguese player emphasized the team’s focus on its goals and the sense that they are on the “right track.”
“It’s been an intense start to the season, with a lot of hard work, and we’re exceeding all expectations in terms of team interaction and training. I feel we have a great squad and are moving in the right direction.”
“We’re fortunate to have a team that understands the goals this club demands of us, which is to win every title. We promise hard work, and most importantly, we must remain consistent in our performances and games. If we do that, we’ll win many titles,” he concluded.
