ALGS Hack: Disruption and Fallout

A significant hack during an ALGS match has thrown the Apex Legends community into disarray. Here’s an explanation of what transpired.

The Apex Legends community was stunned by a major hack on March 17, which occurred during the NA Pro League Split Finals. Several ALGS players found themselves involuntarily equipped with cheats, disrupting the competitive integrity of the event.

The final day of the tournament was intended to determine the 12 teams from NA advancing to ALGS’ Split 1 Playoffs in May. However, due to the security breaches, these plans have been postponed.

Amidst the chaos, with two prominent players from major teams targeted, namely TSM’s Phillip “ImperialHal” Dosen and DarkZero’s Noyan “Genburten” Ozkose, there is much to untangle.

Who Were the ALGS Players Hacked?

Both ImperialHal, a prominent figure in Apex Legends, and Genburten, a member of the championship-winning DarkZero squad, were victims of the hacks during Game Four. Genburten experienced sudden wall-hacking abilities, indicated by a UI interface labeled “TSM HALAL HOOK” appearing on his screen, which also provided an aimbot. Despite attempts to continue playing, Genburten eventually exited the server due to his inability to control the hacks. Shortly after, ImperialHal noticed suspiciously precise aiming during gameplay, indicating aim hacks. Despite warnings from teammates, Hal attempted to continue playing but was ultimately banned along with his teammate Verhulst after trying to queue for a ranked game following the incident.

Should You Uninstall Apex Legends?

Following the hack, concerns arose regarding the safety of both professional players and the general player base. The hacker, known as Destroyer2009, allegedly exploited an RCE (Remote Code Execution) vulnerability within Easy Anti-Cheat, a software utilized by numerous games including Apex Legends. As for uninstalling the game, it’s advisable for affected pro players to reinstall Apex and take additional security measures such as running antivirus software or performing a clean OS reinstall. For the general player base, it’s recommended to refrain from playing until Respawn Entertainment announces a plan to address the issue.

Who Is Apex Legends Hacker Destroyer2009?

The hacker behind the attack, known as Destroyer2009, has gained notoriety in the Apex Legends community for targeting both ranked and professional matches. Notably, Destroyer2009 has previously been involved in incidents such as inundating ranked games with bots and gifting streamer Mande with a large number of in-game packs. The motives behind Destroyer2009’s actions remain unclear, but the impact extends from disrupting ranked matches to sabotaging professional tournaments like ALGS.

When Will ALGS NA Finals Resume?

Approximately 15 minutes after the server shutdown, it was announced that the NA Finals would be postponed due to compromised competitive integrity. However, no specific timeframe for the resumption of the Finals has been provided, nor have any changes to the tournament structure or future Splits been announced. Further updates are expected from Apex Legends Esports.
