Bateria Retires: “I’ve Loved Every Moment, But It’s Time to Move On”
Dione Alex Veroneze, known as Bateria, has officially retired from professional futsal after 15 remarkable seasons. Despite battling a persistent knee injury, he remained one of the most talented left-footed players in the world, always wearing a smile. In an exclusive interview with Relevo, he reflected on his journey, expressing gratitude and pride for a career filled with joy and achievement.
Bateria’s story began in Palmitos, a small town in Brazil’s Santa Catarina state, where he grew up playing soccer outside his father’s auto repair shop. At 34, he has decided to hang up his boots, leaving behind a legacy as one of Spanish futsal’s most beloved figures. His nickname, Bateria, was given to him by friends like Ferrao, and it became synonymous with his dynamic playing style.
“I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s time to step away,” Bateria said. “I’m closing this chapter as a professional player with a sense of fulfillment. I’ve enjoyed every moment—winning, losing, and experiencing the highs and lows of my career. It’s been an incredible journey.”
Throughout his career
Throughout his career, Bateria faced significant physical challenges, particularly with his left knee. “My body has been through a lot, and it’s asking for a break. The injuries may have shortened my career, but I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished over 15 years. I feel joy and satisfaction, not sadness,” he shared.
His decision to retire came after a difficult period with Wanapix, where he struggled with injuries and was unable to play. “These last few months made me realize it was time to stop. I had to think about my health and my family. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right one,” he explained.
Bateria’s career took off when he joined Movistar Inter in 2011 at the age of 20. Known for his skill and infectious smile, he quickly became a fan favorite. “I always wanted to inspire young players. People told me how much they enjoyed watching me play, and that motivated me to keep going,” he said.
Despite the challenges
Despite the challenges, Bateria leaves the sport with no regrets. “I’ve influenced so many people, especially young fans who wanted to be like me. That sense of fulfillment outweighs any sadness about retiring. I look back with pride and gratitude,” he added.
He credits his resilience to his mental strength and the support of his family and close friends, including his physiotherapist, Kleber Barbao. “Kleber believed in me when almost no one else did. He helped me recover and return to the game. I’m forever grateful to him,” Bateria said.
Bateria also emphasized the importance of connecting with fans through social media. “I wanted to bridge the gap between players and fans. I shared my journey, my routines, and my passion for the game. It wasn’t about showing off; it was about building a connection,” he explained.
As he steps away from the court, Bateria leaves behind a legacy of excellence and inspiration. “I’ve achieved so much, and I’m proud of the impact I’ve had on futsal. This isn’t a goodbye—it’s a new beginning,” he concluded, smiling as always.
