Known by his childhood nickname “Kutchy,” Edmilson Camala Sá has emerged as one of the promising talents in Portuguese futsal. Currently playing for AD Fundão in League Placard, the 19-year-old’s journey from playground games to professional futsal offers an inspiring tale of dedication and perseverance.
Early Beginnings
Like many young athletes, Kutchy’s introduction to futsal began in school playgrounds. From age five, he could be found playing at the local rink near his home, initially treating the sport as casual entertainment. By age eight, he joined his neighborhood club, Arroja, where his talent quickly caught the attention of larger organizations.
The Big Club Experience
His first major move came when he joined Sporting, a transition that proved challenging for the young player. The shift from neighborhood-level play to a major club’s tactical sophistication required significant adjustment. Despite being a Benfica supporter, Kutchy’s father, a Sporting fan, influenced this initial choice.
However, his stint at Sporting lasted just one season before he made the switch to SL Benfica, where he would spend most of his formative years. At Benfica, under the guidance of youth coach Claudio Moreira, Kutchy developed both as a player and person. Moreira played a crucial role in his progression to the national team.
Professional Development
After completing his youth career, Kutchy’s professional journey began with a loan to Torreense in the second division, where he contributed to the team’s promotion to the top flight. His elite division debut came this season with AD Fundão, another loan arrangement from Benfica.
The young player has noted significant differences between the second division and League Placard, emphasizing the latter’s increased intensity, tactical sophistication, and the privilege of competing alongside some of the world’s best players in one of futsal’s premier leagues.
Current Success and Future Aspirations
At AD Fundão, Kutchy has made an impressive impact with 19 appearances and four goals, helping the team secure third place in the league. His performances have earned him regular call-ups to the Portuguese under-19 national team, contributing to their successful European Championship qualification campaign.
The young talent harbors dreams of playing in the Spanish league, considering it the pinnacle of professional futsal. He draws inspiration from players like Brazilian Dyego, Portuguese star Pany Varela, and his idol, Benfica’s Wild.
Beyond the Court
While pursuing his futsal career, Kutchy studies Industrial Maintenance, though his primary focus remains on professional sports. His advice to aspiring players echoes the message he gives his own brother: with dedication and focus, nothing is impossible.
