ElPozo Murcia’s Crisis Deepens as Coach Offers Resignation
In a dramatic turn of events in Spanish futsal, ElPozo Murcia’s head coach Dani Martínez announced he will tender his resignation following the team’s fifth consecutive defeat. The latest loss came against struggling Wanapix Zaragoza (2-1), who had previously managed just one victory in eleven matches.
The defeat carries extra significance. As Martínez had publicly stated on Friday that both he and sports coordinator Vinicius Teixeira would step down if the team lost this match. Speaking to Onda Regional de Murcia after the game, Martínez confirmed he would follow through with this promise on Monday.
“This isn’t a hasty decision,” Martínez explained. “When I make public statements, they come after careful consideration. We simply cannot continue on this path.” He expressed gratitude toward the board and sponsors while emphasizing his decision was firm.
recent performance
The team’s recent performance has been particularly concerning, with five straight losses and no wins in their last five league matches. This slide has dropped them to seventh place, jeopardizing their qualification for the upcoming Spanish Cup, which will be hosted in Murcia. Their remaining first-round matches present significant challenges, facing strong opponents including Jimbee Cartagena, Osasuna Magna, and Movistar Inter.
Martínez, who took over in February following Javi Rodríguez’s dismissal and received a contract extension through June 2025, attributed some of the team’s struggles to pressure. “The players have given everything, but it hasn’t been enough,” he noted, emphasizing that the responsibility should be shared collectively.
In other futsal news, Movistar Inter secured their spot in the 2025 Spanish Cup, scheduled for March 20-23 in Murcia, after defeating Noia Portus Apostoli 7-3. They were joined by Servigroup Peñíscola, who qualified following their 3-1 victory over Jaén Paraíso Interior.
The ElPozo Murcia board now faces a crucial decision. Whether to accept the resignation of both Martínez and Teixeira, or to pursue alternative solutions to address the team’s ongoing crisis.
