Chess Goes Digital: Esports World Cup 2025 Announces Historic $1.5M Tournament with Magnus Carlsen

Chess Enters the Digital Arena: Esports World Cup 2025 Announces $1.5M Chess Tournament

The Esports World Cup (EWC) is making history by incorporating chess into its 2025 competition, bridging the gap between traditional and digital gaming. Chess icon Magnus Carlsen has been named the ambassador for this groundbreaking initiative.

Carlsen expressed enthusiasm about chess joining the esports community, highlighting how this partnership could transform the game’s reach. “We have the chance to bring chess to new audiences and spark inspiration in future players,” Carlsen noted, emphasizing the significance of chess entering the esports ecosystem.

EWC Foundation’s CEO Ralf Reichert emphasized the natural evolution of chess from physical boards to digital platforms. He pointed to chess’s enduring competitive spirit and worldwide popularity as key factors in its selection for the event.

Tournament Structure and Format

The competition will integrate with the Champions Chess Tour (CCT) through a series of qualifying events leading to the finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Players will compete in rapid chess matches lasting ten minutes without time additions, creating fast-paced and dynamic gameplay.

Should matches end in ties, an Armageddon format will determine the winner. This tie-breaker gives Black the advantage of winning with a draw, while White receives additional time compensation.

Qualification Path and Prize Distribution

The road to the finals includes:

  • Two online tournaments in February and May, offering $300,000 in combined prizes
  • Direct invitations to the top 12 CCT players
  • A Last Chance Qualifier in Riyadh open to both amateur and professional players, determining the final four spots

The main event will feature 16 competitors battling from July 31 to August 3, 2025, competing for shares of the $1.5 million prize pool.

This tournament marks a significant moment in chess history, representing its official recognition as an esport at a major international competition.
