Spain’s Futsal Triumph: 9-0 Victory Kicks Off European Championship Qualifiers

Spain Kicks Off European Championship Qualifiers with Resounding Victory

The Spanish national futsal team began their 2026 European Championship qualification campaign in spectacular fashion, securing a commanding 9-0 victory against Switzerland in their first official match under new coach Jesús Velasco. Following an impressive friendly win against Portugal, the team showcased its potential for a generational transformation.

Young talent Ricardo Mayor stood out during the match, demonstrating why he’s considered a rising star. The 24-year-old European Under-19 champion, currently with ElPozo Murcia Costa Calida, scored two goals and formed a promising defensive line with Antonio Pérez from Barcelona.

The match took place in Bern’s Sporthalle Weissenstein, a modest venue that contrasted sharply with the team’s dynamic performance. Despite the unimpressive setting, Spain displayed remarkable enthusiasm and tactical prowess.

Mario Rivillos from Palma Futsal captained the team, with Eloy Rojas from Viña Albali Valdepeñas making his debut in the starting lineup. Miquel Feixas, considered the top goalkeeper in the First Division, and Esteban Cejudo also made significant contributions.

The first half was completely dominated by Spain, who went into the break with a 5-0 lead. Francisco Paniagua from Servigroup Peñíscola opened the scoring, showcasing exceptional skill with his left foot. Esteban and Ricardo Mayor each added goals, building an insurmountable lead.

The second half continued Spain’s offensive onslaught. Cecilio Morales from Movistar Inter scored a spectacular volley, while Chemi from Jimbee Cartagena defended effectively. Rivillos converted a penalty, and Renato from Jáen Inner Paradise scored a historic goal, bringing Spain’s total to 2,600 international goals.

The Swiss team, coached by Portuguese tactician Joao Freitas, struggled to contain Spain’s offensive power. By the end of the match, Spain had not only scored nine goals but also hit the post eight times while maintaining a clean sheet.

This impressive performance marks the beginning of a new era for the Spanish national futsal team. After disappointment at the World Cup in Uzbekistan, the team looks rejuvenated and promising.

The team will next face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday at 8:45 p.m. in Cartagena’s Palacio de los Deportes, continuing their European Championship qualification campaign with momentum and confidence.
