Over the years, the tournament has evolved in format, starting as a small competition with limited teams and now drawing millions of viewers worldwide. Worlds is currently the most-watched esports event in history, with 2024’s championship potentially setting a new record.
The event has been pivotal for Riot Games, helping the company grow by attracting mainstream media and filling stadiums globally.
South Korean teams have traditionally led the event, though China has emerged recently with several titles. If Knight beats Faker this year, he’ll be the first non-Korean mid laner to claim the title in over a decade.
While North America and other smaller regions are still titleless, Europe captured the first trophy back in 2011.
Beyond cash prizes and bragging rights, Worlds champions are honored in-game with their own commemorative skins.
