Call of Duty Mobile World Championship 2024: Elevate’s Historic Victory and Declining Viewership

The 2024 Call of Duty Mobile World Championship took place from October 4-6 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia. As part of the DreamHack Atlanta festival. It was the least successful of the three global championships held so far. Partly due to the elimination of fan-favorite teams in the later stages, which impacted viewership.

Notably, the statistics presented exclude data from Chinese streaming platforms, which measure online audience activity differently compared to the “concurrent viewers” metric commonly used.

With a prize pool of $1,000,000, the competition was the most prestigious event of the 2024 Call of Duty Mobile season. Sixteen top teams from around the globe competed, having qualified through various regional tournaments in the Snapdragon Pro Series across North America, Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.

After three days of intense action, Elevate defeated Qing Jiu Club 4-0 in the Grand Final, becoming the new world champions. This victory marked the first time a team from the Garena region (Southeast Asia) and the Philippines claimed the title. Elevate earned $400,000, while Qing Jiu Club took home $170,000.

Though a Filipino team, Blacklist International Ultimate, won the 2021 Call of Duty Mobile World Championship East Finals, that event only included teams from Asia due to the cancellation of the global competition caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, so it doesn’t count as a true international title.

Key Statistics

Key statistics from the 2024 championship include 31,000 peak viewers during the semifinal between Galorys and Elevate, where Elevate won 3-0. This match-up, which pitted top teams from East and West against each other, was the tournament’s most-watched match. However, the absence of Western teams in the final seemed to diminish interest among Western audiences.

The tournament drew 431,200 hours watched and averaged 17,500 viewers over 25 hours of airtime, but these numbers were down from the record-breaking 2023 event, despite increased coverage across more live-streaming platforms. The early eliminations of top teams like Luminosity, GodLike Esports, Wolves, Stalwart Esports, and Tribe Gaming (who failed to make it out of the Swiss Stage) likely contributed to this decline.

Portuguese viewership, however, saw a nearly 10% increase, thanks to Galorys’ deep run and coverage from content creator Japa Tamashiro. While English and Twitch viewership dropped, TikTok gained popularity among Asian audiences, though YouTube remained the dominant platform, led by influencers like iFerg – Live and GamerFleet.

Despite its lower numbers, all three editions of the Call of Duty Mobile World Championship remain among the most-watched events in the game’s competitive history. However, the reliance on top teams for strong viewership poses challenges for maintaining interest in future seasons.
