Erick: «We don't have to be afraid of anyone»

Portugal is wasting no time in the World Cup. Just one day after defeating Tajikistan and securing a spot in the round of 16, the team is already preparing for their next challenge against Morocco, which will determine the group’s top position.

This Friday, Erick Mendonça, who has been named FIFA MVP in Portugal’s first two matches, reflected on their 2021 World Cup clash with Morocco and assessed their upcoming opponent after a training session at the Financial University Training Hall.

Erick Mendonça’s Thoughts

2021 Match: “These are entirely different World Cups. There’s no doubt that where we are now is not only different but better. We’re more mature, and we also have some new, dynamic players who bring a fresh perspective. We’ll feel much more at ease playing Morocco this year compared to back then.”

Morocco: “Moroccan players are bold, skilled on the ball, and excel in one-on-one situations. They’re fast and aren’t afraid to make mistakes. They take a lot of risks, whether they’re in midfield or close to their defense, always trying to play out. This can be a strength, but it can also work against them, as we defend well and could capitalize on their mistakes by pressing higher up. They’re a team with a lot of quality, but we’re focused on ourselves and know we have quality too. We don’t fear anyone, but we’re mindful of the dangers they pose.”

The Draw: “No one in futsal aims for a draw. We’re going out there to win, and that’s our only goal.”

Portugal’s World Cup Ambition: “We know where we want to go, and we understand how tough it will be. We’re not pretending—we know we’re contenders. Whether we’re considered favorites or not, we leave that to the critics. We’re just focused on our journey, taking it one step at a time.”

MVP Honors: “I could only have earned these MVP awards with the help of my teammates, but honestly, I don’t even know who votes for them. I’m not focused on individual trophies, but it’s definitely nice to win twice in two games.”
