Damián Stazzone Announces Retirement: San Lorenzo Legend Bids Farewell

The illustrious career of San Lorenzo legend Damian Stazzone is nearing its conclusion. The 38-year-old defender, who was part of Argentina’s 2016 World Cup-winning team, has announced his retirement from professional play at the end of the season.

Stazzone’s career has been closely tied to San Lorenzo, where he spent nearly his entire playing life. Though he had brief stints with other clubs, including some in the Italian league, these were fleeting compared to his long tenure with “El Ciclón.” Over 17 years with the senior team and 22 years in total with the club, including his youth development, Stazzone became a key figure at San Lorenzo.

A seasoned international, Stazzone was also part of the Argentina squad that won the 2015 Copa América in Ecuador and competed in the 2021 World Cup in Lithuania, where Argentina reached the final but lost to Portugal.

Announcing his retirement on Twitter, Stazzone stated, “I’ve decided to retire at the end of this season. Although I initially thought about stopping now, the situation within our club compelled me to continue competing with my teammates until the year’s end.”
