Supernova 2024 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Super Smash Bros tournaments ever, bringing together the world’s top players from both Ultimate and Melee.

The event, previously known as Super Smash Con, was renamed due to potential copyright concerns with Nintendo. Now under the new name Supernova, the long-standing tournament returns to the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly from August 8 to August 11.

On the Ultimate side, the competition is fierce with reigning champion and Steve specialist Acola returning to the US, along with his major Japanese rival, Miya. FaZe’s Sparg0 is aiming for his first SSC victory, but will face tough competition, especially from his North American counterpart, Sonix.

Sonix, representing Luminosity, is seeking his first tournament win of the year after finishing second in several major events.

The event will also feature 2024’s major winners like Tweek, Zomba, Hurt, Shadic, and more, ensuring a global level of competition. Meanwhile, on the Melee side, although Zain will be absent, top players like Cody Schwab, Mang0, jmook, Hungrybox, Plup, and moky will battle for the title.

In addition to the main events, Supernova 2024 will also include smaller tournaments for less popular Smash games like Smash 64, Brawl, and Smash 4 on Wii U.

The tournament kicks off on Thursday, August 8, with Wii U and Brawl Doubles, followed by Luminosity revealing the Top 10 Ultimate and Melee players at 8:30pm EST/5:30pm PST. The action intensifies on Friday with doubles and singles matches, as the competition narrows down. Saturday will see some champions crowned, with Ultimate down to its final 24 players and Melee to its top 16.

Championship Sunday begins at 11am EST/8am PST, with Melee’s top eight competing at 2pm EST, followed by Ultimate’s final eight at 6pm EST.

All matches will be streamed on VGBootCamp’s various channels. The main events will be on VGBC, but additional streams on VGBC2, VGBC3, and VGBC4 will cover more action and side events.

With speculation of a new Smash game on the horizon, this could be one of the last major tournaments for Ultimate. Will Acola maintain his dominance? Can Sparg0 or Sonix step up to the challenge? Supernova 2024 is an event you won’t want to miss.
