Mariona Caldentey’s transfer saga has finally come to an end. Arsenal Women took advantage of the second day of the transfer window to announce the signing of the former Barça star. Putting an end to all the speculation about her next move. After winning every possible title with Barça last season, Mariona joins Arsenal as one of the team’s standout players.
In her first interview as a Gunner, Mariona expressed her happiness and excitement about joining the London club. “It’s the right time for a new challenge for me, and Arsenal is the perfect place. I think what Arsenal is doing as a club is incredible, both on and off the pitch. I love the way we want to play as a team, and I think a strong mentality is being built here,” she told the club’s media.
She will have the opportunity to play at least 11 games at the Emirates Stadium, with more possible if they progress in the Champions League. “It’s amazing to see what the club has achieved off the pitch, with fans following the team everywhere and breaking many records. I’m looking forward to getting started, helping the team win trophies, and entertaining our fans,” she added, referring to Arsenal’s impressive attendance records from the previous season.
Mariona will wear the number 8 jersey, previously worn by Arsenal Women’s academy graduate and legend Jordan Nobbs.
She will strengthen a forward line featuring notable names and will share the role with Caitlin Foord. “She is a proven winner on the biggest stage, which is exactly where we aspire to be as a club.
We believe Mariona will be an excellent addition to our squad as we prepare for an exciting new season together,” said Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall. Mariona’s departure from Barça marks a significant change, as she was one of the most in-form players and a key piece in the team’s formation. She bid farewell with an emotional letter and a press conference where she was visibly moved. “Believe me when I say that it was a very difficult and well-thought-out decision, but in life, you have to be honest and accept when cycles end and sometimes paths diverge.
I can assure you that I have grown at Barça, fulfilled many dreams – even some I didn’t know I could have – and have been very, very happy,” she said. Additionally, she left a message about the future of domestic competition: “I hope that Liga F doesn’t just have a professional name, but that it truly becomes a professional league.”
