Benfica Clinches First Semi-Final Spot in Placard League

The initial semi-finalist of the Placard League has emerged as Benfica secured their spot after a victory over Eléctrico (4-3) on Wednesday. Extending their triumph from the previous match in Ponte de Sor. Across two games, Benfica decisively clinched the quarter-final series, securing one of the four coveted spots in the championship.

The match unfolded in two distinct halves: an initial phase marked by Benfica’s dominance under Mário Silva’s leadership. Followed by a later period where Eléctrico exhibited more aggression, posing a different challenge for Benfica’s defense. Despite the match remaining uncertain until the final moments, Benfica ultimately clinched a well-deserved victory at Luz.

From the outset, the hosts aimed to dictate the tempo of the game, with Eléctrico seemingly content to cede control and capitalize on transitional opportunities, albeit with limited success initially. Only after eight minutes did Léo Santana offer a glimpse of hope for the Alentejo team with their first notable offensive move.

Eléctrico managed to take the lead

Despite resilient defense by Diogo Basílio, who performed impressively, Eléctrico managed to take the lead after nine minutes through a skillful play by Simi Saiotti, assisted by Rúben Freire. However, Benfica’s relentless pressure paid off. With Higor de Souza equalizing in the 14th minute and Rocha turning the tide in their favor just before halftime.

The halftime break seemed to invigorate João Freitas Pinto’s team, as they adopted a more aggressive stance in the second half, challenging Benfica across the pitch. Despite this, the first significant opportunity fell to Benfica, with Diego Nunes hitting the post. Rúben Freire attempted to level the score with an individual effort, but was thwarted by Léo Gugiel. However, he succeeded moments later, equalizing the score for Eléctrico.

Following the equalizer, both teams intensified their efforts, resulting in opportunities at both ends. Benfica eventually seized the lead with a crucial goal from Edmilson Kutchy, despite Eléctrico’s attempt to level the score by deploying an additional outfield player. Despite a late goal from Eléctrico, Benfica held on to secure their spot in the semi-finals.

While Benfica celebrates their advancement, their attention now shifts to their upcoming opponent, SC Braga. Who emerged victorious against ADCR Caxinas in their respective quarter-final series.
