Cloud9 has committed to donating over $1,000 to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in response to G2 Esports’ controversial post, which featured a meme about suicide. This pledge comes ahead of their match in the VCT Americas playoffs. The post by G2, depicting an emoji with a G2-branded gun skin in its mouth, drew widespread criticism from the Valorant community. Particularly given its timing during Mental Health Awareness Month and the history of suicide within the gaming community.
In addition to the initial $1,000 donation, Cloud9 has announced that they will donate $100 to the AFSP for every round they win against G2 during the match. This gesture serves as a pointed commentary on G2’s decision to keep the controversial post online despite community backlash.
The Valorant community has rallied behind Cloud9’s initiative, with many expressing support for the donation pledge. Meanwhile, both Cloud9 and G2 are also competing for a chance to qualify for VCT Masters Shanghai. Highlighting the stakes of their upcoming match beyond the charitable aspect.
