The New York Subliners franchise in the Call of Duty League has been accused of abandoning their former amateur team abruptly. Nullifying their contracts and canceling their travel arrangements just over a week before the Major 3 event.
In February, the Subliners announced their acquisition of a Challengers team to compete in the amateur bracket at CDL Majors. <distinguishing themselves as one of the few CDL teams investing in the Tier 2 scene.
However, in the lead-up to the third Major of the 2024 season, the team attempted to make a roster change to optimize their chances at the Toronto event, which backfired.
Multiple sources revealed that the Subliners had contracts with three of the rostered players and had made bookings for flights, hotel accommodations, and team passes for all four players. Yet, when they tried to introduce a new fourth player, the organization abruptly altered their plans.
Nasty Work
Just ten days before the event, the players were reportedly informed that they were being released from their contracts and would no longer receive funding from NYSL for the tournament. They were even asked to cover the expenses for the team pass that the organization had initially acquired for them. A move former player Dylan ‘Mock’ Mock condemned as “nasty work.”
Former NYSL Academy player Nemensions disclosed that the players only stumbled upon this information accidentally and suggested that they might not have been informed until closer to the event if they hadn’t found out by chance.
Teammate Mamba expressed frustration, stating they were “hoed out of funding” and described the team’s treatment as “insane.”
Despite this controversy, the New York Subliners’ main team is expected to compete at the Major in Toronto. Aiming to improve their performance from online matches and demonstrate why they are the reigning world champions.
In the Call of Duty League, the New York Subliners are the most recent champions. As the final weekend of Major 3 qualifiers approaches, the Subliners currently hold sixth place in the current split standings. However, they aspire to establish themselves among the “top 4” teams, alongside OpTic Texas, Atlanta FaZe, and Toronto Ultra, according to fan consensus.
