FlyQuest’s Bwipo sit down for a long interview, hailed as the premier top laner in the LCS, to delve into what fueled his motivation during his hiatus from professional play last year and what drives his resurgence. He expresses unwavering confidence in his team’s ability to transcend the shortcomings of the NA scene and reclaim the LCS’s prominence.
In the wake of FlyQuest’s substantial investment in assembling a formidable LCS squad last year, only to falter in 2023, there was a palpable sense of apprehension among LCS enthusiasts regarding the organization’s prospects for 2024. Nevertheless, FlyQuest has found its winning formula.
Their commanding victory over Cloud9 has positioned FlyQuest as the frontrunners in the LCS, with Gabriël ‘Bwipo’ Rau emerging as a pivotal force driving their momentum. Widely acclaimed as the region’s top top laner by peers and analysts alike, Bwipo has seamlessly returned from his hiatus, asserting his dominance over the league.
Bwipo has reclaimed much of the confidence that defines him as a professional player. He harbors a belief that FlyQuest possesses the potential to rectify the shortcomings of previous LCS teams and confidently anticipates their performance in MSI. While NA’s international success has been sparse in recent years, Bwipo remains optimistic about a potential turnaround in 2024.
Upon sitting down with us following FlyQuest’s emphatic victory over Cloud9, Bwipo radiated with satisfaction. His journey of redemption has been resoundingly successful, culminating in his current standing.
Self-Doubt
“I did struggle with self-doubt,” Bwipo confessed. “Although I always believed in my capabilities, deep down, I questioned whether I truly stood as the undisputed best. That uncertainty fueled my determination to surpass my previous performances, particularly my tenure with Team Liquid in 2022, which I refuse to let define my legacy in the LCS.”
Bwipo elucidated that his quest for excellence extends beyond individual prowess to encompass mastery in every facet of the game, whether in laning, teamfighting, or strategic play. He acknowledges that his journey back to the top has been a meticulous process, characterized by unwavering dedication and a relentless pursuit of perfection.
While Bwipo basks in his current form, he attributes much of his success to his teammates, acknowledging their pivotal role in fostering an environment conducive to his peak performance.
“Even in moments of falter, I trust in my team’s ability to regroup and strategize collectively. This synergy mirrors the dynamics I experienced during my tenure with Fnatic, particularly during our peak years,” Bwipo reflected.
Bwipo’s hiatus from professional play prompted a profound shift in his perspective, particularly concerning his role within a team dynamic.
Focus
“Previously, my focus centered on securing victories at any cost, often at the expense of individual growth. However, I’ve come to realize that true success stems from personal mastery, which in turn enhances our team’s chances of victory,” Bwipo shared.
While Bwipo refrains from disparaging the NA scene, he acknowledges its inherent challenges, attributing FlyQuest’s potential breakthrough to the leadership of Kacper ‘Inspired’ Słoma.
“I firmly believe that Inspired possesses the qualities necessary to elevate our gameplay beyond the confines of the NA meta. While the region boasts individual talent, there’s a distinct lack of cohesion and strategic clarity, factors which Inspired has sought to rectify,” Bwipo asserted.
In assessing his teammates’ performances, Bwipo lauds each member’s contributions, reserving special praise for Jensen, whom he perceives as a standout performer. Nevertheless, it’s Inspired’s leadership that Bwipo credits for FlyQuest’s championship potential.
As FlyQuest secures their berth in MSI, Bwipo exudes confidence in the team’s prospects. Reflecting on his journey, Bwipo emphasizes the significance of international competition in fueling his drive for excellence.
“Playing on the international stage epitomizes the culmination of my efforts and sacrifices. It’s not merely about winning titles; it’s about proving to myself and others that I belong among the best. Every opportunity to compete internationally reinforces my resolve and propels me to strive for greatness,” Bwipo concluded.
