The XIV Edition of the Copa América Futsal is set to commence on, February 2, in the Guaraní town of Luque. Once again, Paraguay plays host, just as it did in the 2022 Edition. The tournament features the participation of the 10 teams comprising Conmebol. With the added incentive that the top four teams will secure places allocated to their Confederation for the upcoming World Cup in Uzbekistan, scheduled from September 14 to October 6.
In a familiar storyline, it’s once again an ‘all against Brazil’ scenario. The ‘Canarinha’ team is more Spanish than ever this year. In the roster of 16 players selected by Marquinhos Xavier, nine are Spaniards. Gadeia, Rafa Santos, Felipe Valerio, and Marlon (ElPozo); Dyego, Matheus, and Pito (FC Barcelona); Carlos Espindola (Jan Paraso Interior). Neguinho (Mallorca Palma Futsal), who will join Antonio Vadillo’s squad after the Copa America.
Reflecting on history from the 13 previous editions: Brazil claimed victory in 10, while Argentina secured the other three, the latest being in 2022. This sets the stage for a ‘Hispanic’ Albiceleste to defend the title with a lineup boasting eight players from the League. Mati Rosa, Pablo Taborda, and Alan Brandi (Jan Paraso Interior); Lucas Tripodi and Ángel Claudino (ATP Iluminación Ribera Navarra). Matías Starna and Luciano Gauna (Pescola); and Nico Sarmiento (Noia Portus Apostoli).
